Poetical Works of Johnson Parnell Gray and Smollett With Memoirs Critical Dissertations and Explanatory Notes Thomas Gray Books

ELEGY WRITTEN IN A COUNTRY CHURCHYARD.
The curfew tolls the knell of parting day,
_The lowing herd wind slowly o'er the lea,
The ploughman homeward plods his weary way,
_And leaves the world to darkness and to me.

This edition of four 18th Century poets came out in 1854, and was digitized by Gutenberg shortly thereafter. Hence, it lacks the links we have come to expect (linked table of contents, links to the footnotes). If you want to go to Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard (certainly the most famous poem here), you will have to do some searching within the text and some bookmarking.

The verse itself, however, is well formatted, and the there are few, if any, typos (beware Select Poems of Thomas Gray-one of the worst-formatted books in the Kindle store). Certainly Thomas Gray and Samuel Johnson belong on everyone's poetry shelf. Here is a sample of Johnson's verse, from "The Vanity of Human Wishes":

Ye nymphs of rosy lips and radiant eyes,
Whom pleasure keeps too busy to be wise,
Whom joys with soft varieties invite,
By day the frolic, and the dance by night,
Who frown with vanity, who smile with art,
And ask the latest fashion of the heart;
What care, what rules your heedless charms shall save,
Each nymph your rival, and each youth your slave?
The rival batters, and the lover mines.
With distant voice neglected Virtue calls,
Less heard and less, the faint remonstrance falls;
-----
Here Beauty falls betray'd, despised, distress'd,
And hissing Infamy proclaims the rest.

I enjoyed reading the book. It brought back memories of my school days, reading historical material. As in school we do appreciate why we are there. Now I appreciate to works of writers.
